Justin and I have been together for 7 years now! We spent our anniversary in Monterey, CA where we walked around Cannery Row, went to the Monterey Bay Aquarium, and ate a lot of seafood at the Old Fisherman's Wharf! We had such a good time and can't wait to come back in the future!
Things To Do
It was once the site for sardine canning factories, but now has restaurants, shops, and hotels. This is a historic district that was actually mentioned in two of John Steinbeck's novels, Cannery Row and Sweet Thursday. It used to be called Ocean View Avenue, but was renamed in 1958 in honor of Steinbeck's novels.
This is a scenic drive you can take along the coast. You can stop and take in the beautiful views. It is a private drive and costs $10.75 per vehicle and it is about an hour drive without stopping. Fun Fact: Even though it is no longer the same route as it was when it opened in 1881, it actually is still 17 miles long.
We actually did not do this as it was going to rain that day, so we're planning on coming back in the spring to do it when there is better weather!
The aquarium is one of the biggest attractions in Monterey. There are so many different marine animals to see - I especially liked the otters :) I would recommend giving yourself 3 hours to walk around the whole aquarium.
Just a heads up, buy your tickets in advance just to make sure you get in! Also you're required to provide proof of vaccination and ID as of December 2021.
This is no longer a wholesale fish market, but is now a wharf with many seafood restaurants and touristy stops. We ate at Old Fisherman's Grotto on our anniversary and it was soooo good! Definitely recommend the clam chowder!
